Overdose
- If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
- Symptoms of overdose may include muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat.
Medicinal Applications
- Potassium iodide is used to prepare for thyroid surgery along with antithyroid medicine; to treat high thyroid levels; to protect the thyroid in a radiation emergency.
- It also has been used as an expectorant which may help loosen and break up mucous.
What To Do In Case Of Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
- Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
Usage Instructions
- This medication is usually taken after meals three to four times a day.
- To administer, measure the prescribed amount using a dropper or special calibrated spoon.
- Place the medication in a full glass of water then stir and drink immediately.
- Follow with another glass (8 oz or 240 ml) of water, unless your doctor directs you otherwise.
- Take this medication as prescribed.
- Do not increase your dose or take this more often than directed.

- Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light.
- Do not store in the bathroom.
